Mallow

Scientific name: Malva Sylvestris

Origin: herbal
Family: Malvaceae, mallow family
Category: Medicinal herbs

Use and origin

The mallow is also popularly called cheese poplar, although it has nothing to do with a tree like the poplar and is only a herbaceous plant of 30 to 140 cm in size. The name cheese poplar is derived from the edible seeds, which resemble a cheese wheel and can be used to make porridge for children.

The leaves and flowers of the wild mallow are also edible and have a medicinal effect. The mucilages they contain can soothe a sore throat, relieve inflammation in the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract, as well as relieve coughing or heartburn.

As one of the oldest useful plants in the world, the wild mallow was already valued in antiquity as a vegetable and medicinal plant.

The mallow originates from southern Europe and Asia, but is now widespread worldwide in subtropical and temperate zones of both hemispheres.

MALVA SYLVESTRIS FLOWER EXTRACT - Flower extract
MALVA SYLVESTRIS FLOWER/LEAF EXTRACT - Flower and leaf extract

Effect

Wild mallow has above all a healing effect on the skin as well as on the mucous membranes, both externally and internally. Its effect can be compared to a moistened silk cloth, which lays itself protectively over inflamed and irritated areas. In addition, the dyes contained have an antibacterial effect and the tannins contained have a slightly astringent effect. This is why mallow flowers are used as medicinal drugs for dry coughs, irritation of the mucous membranes in the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract, as well as in folk medicine for the treatment of inflamed skin, itching, mild sunburn and for softening boils.

Mallow in cosmetics and skin care

The cosmetic flower extract of wild mallow also uses its mucilages made from complex sugar compounds. These gently coat the skin's surface, protecting it from harmful environmental influences and moisturising it by forming hydrocolloids.

In addition, anthocyanins such as malvidin or delphinidin soothe the skin and counteract premature skin ageing through their antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the flower extract contains skin-friendly fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E and traces of coumarins.

Due to its soothing and protective ingredients, mallow extract is an excellent cosmetic ingredient for irritated, reddened, irritated, inflamed, mature, neurodermitic or acne-prone skin. It is very well tolerated and gives a relaxed, fresh and even complexion.
