The history of cosmetics goes back to antiquity, more than 5000 years before Christ, the Egyptians, Greeks or Romans already tried their hand at cosmetics. Natural oils and delicately scented ointments were applied to the skin for a well-groomed appearance. In the Middle Ages, less cosmetics were used; for the church, most physical things were something sinful, so hygiene was neglected. The unpleasant smell of the body was covered up by perfumes and fragrances.
Even in the Renaissance, washing was still sickening. However, make-up became trendy again, especially in Italy, France and England. Hair care also became more important again, as elaborate hairstyles were widespread.
The Baroque period was strongly characterised by perfumed wigs, boldly made-up lips, rosy cheeks and powdered face and décolleté with rice flour. The first skin cream was extracted from the sperm whale and was used by the upper classes. To the delight of mankind, Napoleon's wife made washing a trend again and improved hygiene enormously.
