Origin

The lemon originated in South Asia, probably in north-eastern India, the Himalayan region or northern Burma. The plant was cultivated by humans more than 2500 years ago and spread from there to different parts of the world.

Nowadays, the citrus fruit is grown in many countries, including Italy, Spain, Greece, the USA, Argentina, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. There are also different varieties of lemons, which have different characteristics depending on the region and climate. For example, Italian lemons are known for their thick peel and high juice content, while Californian lemons tend to have thinner peels and a higher proportion of pulp.

Effect
