Cornflower

Scientific name: Centaurea cyanus

Origin: herbal
Family: Asteraceae, Compositae
Category: Medicinal plant

Origin and use

The cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) probably originates from Europe and Asia, but its exact origin is not known. It was probably already cultivated in antiquity and later introduced into many regions of the world.

The cornflower is often associated with grain fields, as it was often found as a weed in grain fields in the past and was thus a characteristic feature of Europe's grain-growing landscapes. The name "cornflower" is probably derived from this association with grain fields.

The cornflower has different uses. In folk medicine it is often used to treat eye inflammations. For this purpose, the flowers are brewed into a tea or tincture and used as an eye wash. Cornflowers are also popular as ornamental plants in gardens, especially because of their blue colour and long flowering period. In addition, it is used as a food colouring to give food and drinks a blue hue. For this purpose, the flowers are dried and ground.

Cornflower extract is suitable as natural care for the hair and is often used in shampoos and conditioners. The active ingredients contained can help to smooth, detangle and tame the hair. They can also provide relief from problems such as dandruff and a dry, itchy scalp.

Cornflower blossoms are also used as a natural hair dye to cover grey hair or to give the hair a natural blue tint. To do this, the blossoms are brewed in a decoction and applied as a conditioner.
